Trayvon Martin’s parents appeared on “The View” on Monday, discussing the upcoming anniversary of their son’s death, their new book, and race relations. Check out the video below.
Next month will mark five years since Martin was fatally shot by George Zimmerman. Over the last two and a half years, the late teen’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, have spent time writing a book called Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin. With its release set for Tuesday, Fulton shared, “It’s our feelings about how parents feel when they lose a child.”
Martin called Zimmerman’s behavior in the time since he was acquitted “troublesome,” and Fulton said that although she knows forgiveness is part of the healing process, she hasn’t reached that stage. “I haven’t gotten to that point yet to forgive. Even though the calendar says it’s been five years, it doesn’t feel like five years. There’s still a big hole in my heart,” she said.
Whoopi Goldberg brought up the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and asked how to bring the two sides — police and activists — together. Martin answered, “I think we start with becoming more diversified as a country and start understanding each other. And in order for us to understand each other, we have to sit down and be able to talk to each other.”
Added Fulton, “I think we have to go a step further. We need to put prayer back in this country. This country needs a lot of prayer.” And though the possibility of Martin’s parents running for office has been raised, both said they are currently committed to continuing their grassroots activism for the “long-term.” Watch below.
