Unlike Republican Presidents before, Donald Trump is getting things done!
Hopefully, this will set a precedent for all future Republican Presidents. Donald Trump is working hard to do the unprecedented: keep his promises. He has been doing all he can to do the things that he promised to do.
Thus, the headline at The Hill: “Surprise! Trump doing what he said he would.”
In his first frantic week at the White House, Donald Trump is doing almost exactly what he promised to do during his campaign, stunning those who thought he’d adapt his style as president.
Trump has signed an executive order to begin building a wall on the Mexican border and doubled down on his promises to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement and repeal ObamaCare.
Actions to temporarily suspend visas for people coming to the United States from a number of Muslim nations are expected to come soon.
Trump hasn’t stopped tweeting either, nor has he quit his habit of launching into new fights seemingly on a whim. Much of his first week in office has been dominated by his claims, without any evidence, that massive voter fraud cost him a popular vote victory to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
On Wednesday, he announced a “major investigation” into his unsubstantiated claims about voter fraud.
President Obama famously said that “elections have consequences” in explaining to Republicans why he was moving forward with a nearly $1 trillion stimulus plan and his signature healthcare bill.
Now Trump is showing Washington and the world the truth of Obama’s words.
In the current media environment, all allegations about things the mainstream media doesn’t want to believe (or others to believe) will always count as “unsubstantiated” to the media. Thus, Donald Trump is going to have the issue really investigated rather than simply refusing to do so and claiming the resulting lack of evidence proves that no voter fraud occurred.
Why hasn’t any other Republican President done this?
Indeed, why haven’t any other Republican Presidents done anything like the number of things that Donald Trump has done in his first days in office?
The question was asked on Fox News:
The claim that George W. Bush did not have a mandate for change doesn’t strike me as much of an explanation. He was following the Presidency of Bill Clinton. He really didn’t have a liberal legacy to overturn?
Really, the issue is being avoided by giving that kind of answer. In 2000, George Bush ran as the establishment candidate who had a hint of conservative attractiveness by association with the state of Texas. Real change candidates were defeated by the media and the Republican machines. The media always has a motive to help the Republican establishment so that the Democrat candidate has a better chance of winning and there’s less chance of any liberal policies actually being reversed.
What we got with George Bush was the same thing we would have gotten from John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012: more statism and a lot of rhetoric about “reaching across the aisle.”
That’s why they both lost.
Now Donald Trump has set new expectations for future Republican Presidents. So far, he is matching talk with action.
