The end of the Jedi could be near. The dramtic first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi is finally here, just nine months before the movie opens. The trailer was shown at Star Wars Celebration, a convention taking place in Orlando.
The Last Jedi takes place right after the end of The Force Awakens, which ended with Rey (Daisy Ridley) handing Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) the lightsaber he lost at Cloud City back. In The Force Awakens, Rey, R2-D2 and Chewbacca flew to Ahch-To, using the piece of the map BB-8 and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) brought from Lor-San-Tekka (Max Von Sydow) to find Luke.
Meanwhile, the First Order’s pride took a hit after the destruction of the mega Death Star … er … Starkiller Base. Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) probably lost a little faith in Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Adam Driver), so Kylo will have to prove he’s up to the task of ending the Jedi once and for all.
Now, as we saw in the teaser, Luke does decide to train Rey and the First Order has not been deterred in its quest to take over the galaxy. We also saw Poe’s X-Wing blow up. He clearly goes through a lot of X-Wings.
The Last Jedi also stars John Boyega as Finn, the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa and Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Katana. Fisher completed work on the film before her death in December 2016.
Laura Dern and Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro play new characters. Looper‘s Rian Johnson wrote and directed the movie.
The new Star Wars film hits theaters on December 15. It will be followed by Episode IX in 2019, and that film will be directed by Jurassic World‘s Colin Treverrow.
