The special announcement Good Morning America teased for Star Wars fans on Monday turned out to be a new Force For Change contest, which supports UNICEF and the Starlight Children’s Foundation. The new contest is the start of Disney revving up the promotional machine before December’s The Last Jedi release.
Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, and Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, were both on GMA to help make the announcement. The two will be playing their characters again in The Last Jedi.
The prizes for the new Force For Change prizes are an overnight stay at Skywalker Ranch, a walk-on role in the Han Solo movie and a trip to the Last Jedi premiere in December. Click here to enter the contest. You can donate as little as $10 for 100 entries to win.
The Force For Change charity kicked off in 2014 while Disney was promoting The Force Awakens and helps raise money for UNICEF Kid Power. Contests to raise money for the group are hosted through Omaze. The first Force For Change contest was a chance to be in The Force Awakens, while another was a chance to attend the TFA premiere.
That first contest raised $4.26 million, Variety reported. Disney then donated another $1 million to go to UNICEF Innovation Labs. People from over 125 countries participated.
Some might have hoped that the special announcement would be the trailer for The Last Jedi, but that’s not coming out until Friday in Orlando. Star Wars Celebration, which kicks off on Thursday, will host a special Last Jedi panel with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, writer/director Rian Johnson and other “special guests.” That’s when we’re expected to see the Last Jedi trailer.
