The United Nations opposed ceding control of the strategic port of Hodeidah in Yemen to the Saudi-led coalition, on Tuesday morning, 21.03.2017.
U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq says that “The humanitarian community delivers assistance in Yemen solely based on needs and not on political considerations, and will continue to do so through all available means.”
Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition had issued an statement and asked the UN to facilitate humanitarian aids to the Yemeni people.
Haq added that the warring sides in Yemen have a responsibility to protect civilian infrastructure and civilians.
“These are not obligations they can shift to others,” Haq said.
Hodeidah is under control of the Ansar Allah forces. Saudi Arabia and its allies were trying to take control of this strategic port which is located near the Bab el-Mandeb.
The Saudi-led coalition is continuing air strikes in Yemen against civilians and infrastructures across the country.
