Oscar De La Hoya was arrested for DUI on Wednesday. The arrest took place following a traffic stop in Pasadena, California.
De La Hoya was pulled over for speeding around 2 a.m. local time. The police suspected he was under the influence, and had the boxer step out of his Land Rover for a series of field sobriety tests. After failing them, he was taken into custody for DUI.
The star has since been issued a citation, and released into the care of his manager, according to TMZ. Sadly, this is just the latest substance abuse incident for the athlete. De La Hoya has openly struggled with drugs and alcohol for years.
He entered rehab for a number of weeks in 2011, and then announced in 2013 that he would be seeking in-patient treatment at a facility again. As Gossip Cop reported at the time, De La Hoya said he was “voluntarily” getting help, even though it meant missing an upcoming Floyd Mayweather – Canelo Alvarez fight that he organized with his Golden Boy Promotions company.
De La Hoya said at the time, “Canelo Alvarez and I have big fights coming up this weekend. His is the ring and mine in treatment… I explained this to Canelo and he understood that my health and longterm recovery from my disease must come first.”
An Olympic gold medalist, De La Hoya has also admitted to being suicidal due to his addiction issues. He has not publicly commented on the arrest.
