President Donald Trump just picked his first overseas trip as Commander-in-Chief, shocking some that he chose to go to the Middle East. It was a brave move considering he’s perhaps more hated there than by liberals in his own country, as he makes no apologies for bombing places such as Syria without much warning. Going with him on his trip is First Lady Melania Trump who is far different than most women in Islam but expected to follow the strict rules Muslim women are held to as part of the culture.
This was never an issue for Michelle Obama who embraced Muslims and Islam with open arms out of acceptance and tolerance. However, that era is over now that the Trumps do things much differently in the White House, holding true to their culture and tradition, for which they honor over any other.
It’s standard practice that when women from other parts of the world travel to certain areas of the Middle East, they are expected to cover their heads as a show of respect for the Islamic culture which prohibits women from showing much of their body including their female form, except in front of men whom they are directly related to. Just as Muslim women are allowed to wear their burkas and hijabs here in America, western women should be allowed to dress as they feel accustomed to while in other countries. Michelle was quick to bow down to Islam, but the Trumps are not.
While neither Melania or Donald had brought this modesty code up to any official ahead of their trip to Saudi Arabia next week, the country’s Foreign Minister, Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, knew not to expect it out of this couple who set a different precedence as the President and First Lady of the United States.
As a sudden show of respect for our culture and this couple, Al-Jubeir said that beautiful Melania wouldn’t be held to the same headdress standard as her predecessor. However, it’s not all as it may seem.

“America’s first lady has not been ‘ordered’ to dress conservatively in Saudi Arabia, the country chosen by her husband as his first official overseas destination. Along with meetings on the US president’s itinerary, there will also reportedly be time for entertainment in the lavish Arab kingdom.”
“While the choice of the first country to be visited by Trump as America’s 45th president has been widely discussed in the media, a question has arisen whether there is a chance to see the US president’s wife covered in a traditionally strict Muslim attire.”
“Women in Saudi Arabia, including foreign visitors, are typically expected to wear a floor length dress – abaya, and a head scarf. However, when asked whether the US first lady would have to dress accordingly, a Saudi Arabia official said Riyadh “usually doesn’t demand” a specific dress-code, but rather ‘accepts suggestions’.”
“’We welcome any style in clothing,’ Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir told the media on Thursday, as cited by RIA Novosti.”
While the gesture is certainly thoughtful, there may be ulterior motive there for the sudden change of heart and expectation, which is the only thing more powerful to Muslims than the teachings of Islam. Money is often at the root of many decisions and perhaps this is no exception since Saudi Arabia stands to lose millions in foreign aid from the U.S. if they piss our president off who has proven to make sudden changes himself. It wouldn’t necessarily be the wisest thing to try to force the man who is not already keen on Islam to follow your rules when he’s in charge of some funds your country benefits from.
It would be an ultimate show of dominance to have made Melania, who is married to a president as anti-Islamic as Trump, don a head covering representing the oppressive culture. Without saying a word, our president’s power changes the course of that longstanding tradition which speaks volumes as to who we have in office. America is the world’s superpower and we don’t bow down or hide our heads from anyone. We finally have a Commander-in-Chief who represents this, wears his patriotism with pride while balancing respect for other cultures without bowing down to them.
