Latina Enrolled In $48K University Demands Whites Pay Reparation Money To Fund Her Spring Break

Leandra Vargas believes she is owed money from her white peers

The “something for nothing” mentality has sadly taken over much of our society. Illegal immigrants often have the idea that they deserve to come to America and be taken care of. Black advocates have frequently spoken of their belief that whites owe them reparations for former slaves. The list of demands never ends.

Students at the pricey Pitzer College in Claremont, California are now joining the handout line, making monetary demands of their fellow students.

Pitzer, with about 1,000 students, is part of Claremont Colleges. The college is predominantly female, 57% women and 43% men. The school website boasts quite a few achievements including;

  • Ranked #15 for Most LGBTQ-Friendly – Princeton Review, 2016
  • Ranked #13 for Most Liberal Students – Princeton Review, 2016
  • First college in Southern California to divest from fossil-fuel stocks
  • A top 20 liberal arts college for “Campus Ethnic Diversity” – 2017 U.S. News & World Report Rankings

The college is also notably expensive. A private institution, their tuition was $48,660 for the 2015-16 school year. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) gives a comparison, in the 2014-15 year, the average 4-year private institution cost $37,990. In addition they are exclusive, acknowledging an acceptance rate of only about 13%.

At an institution of that alleged caliber, one would not expect to find students walking around looking for money. As a vocal liberal school, you might also assume students and staff would be incredibly tolerant. It turns out that neither is accurate.

Earlier this week, a dormitory wall at the college was plastered by graffiti. The wall is actually available for students to express themselves artistically, so the issue is not defacing property. The concern was the message.

The message caused some confusion among students. The authors were quick to explain

“White Girl, Take OFF your hoops!!!” was that the wall proclaimed. When a student expressed confusion over the message, Alegria Martinez, a Pitzer College Resident Assistant (RA) and active member of the “Latinx Student Union,” stepped forward to educate her. In an email to the entire student body Martinez wrote,

“[T]he art was created by myself and a few other WOC [women of color] after being tired and annoyed with the reoccuring [sic] theme of white women appropriating styles … that belong to the black and brown folks who created the culture. The culture actually comes from a historical background of oppression and exclusion. The black and brown bodies who typically wear hooped earrings, (and other accessories like winged eyeliner, gold name plate necklaces, etc) are typically viewed as ghetto, and are not taken seriously by others in their daily lives. Because of this, I see our winged eyeliner, lined lips, and big hoop earrings serving as symbols [and] as an everyday act of resistance, especially here at the Claremont Colleges. Meanwhile we wonder, why should white girls be able to take part in this culture (wearing hoop earrings just being one case of it) and be seen as cute/aesthetic/ethnic. White people have actually exploited the culture and made it into fashion.”

Other students who helped with the message added similar rants, portraying their white peers as racists.

“If you didn’t create the culture as a coping mechanism for marginalization, take off those hoops, if your feminism isn’t intersectional take off those hoops, if you try to wear mi cultura when the creators can no longer afford it, take off those hoops, if you are incapable of using a search engine and expect other people to educate you, take off those hoops, if you can’t pronounce my name or spell it … take off those hoops / I use “those” instead of “your” because hoops were never “yours” to begin with.”

Yesterday the demands became financial. Leandra Vargas, who self-identifies with “they/them” pronouns, sent an email to her fellow students.

Vargas’ letter made many people angry

The QPOC in her email refers to Queer People of Color. That name is not listed on Pitzer’s website as a student organization so it is perhaps an unofficial group.

It is unclear why Vargas thinks people should pay for her spring break. Her references in the email of “genocide and enslavement of our ppl,” are rather obscure. It might be slightly less ridiculous if Vargas demanded that her expensive school be paid for by whites; perhaps it already is.

A look at her Facebook page reveals an outspoken student. She speaks about the murder of “trans people,” sexism, and racism. Perhaps she needs the trip as a break from all her activist commitments.

Vargas seems to advocate violence as a means of protest

Vargas is also an artist, regularly posting updates about her band, Leandra and the Dream. Based on a site that posts her music, she records rap and hip hop.

Naturally, the story of her email was not well received by many. Comments included,

“That email was painful to read. What is that $50,000 tuition paying for? It certainly isn’t providing coherent usage of the English language.”

““Diversity” means too many white people. It has nothing to do with any other race. “Diversity” IS #WhiteGenocide.”

“…and she says her $50K college is “toxic” – why is she attending that hateful place?”

“48,000 a year produced this?! I have never been more ashamed to be an American of Mexican descent. Embarrassing. We used to have pride in working hard for everything we needed in life. This genius feels entitled to have white folks pay for her frivolity by virtue of her status as a victim. Slaves and victims of genocide generally do not attend $48,000 a year colleges.”

Vargas is part of the generation that the liberals have raised. The entitlement and blatant demands are beginning to wear on the hardworking citizens of America. Nowhere else in the world does a population exist that believes they are due so much.

America has always been a place to dream, where hard work and dedication could open doors. With the new liberal values, America has become a place to keep your doors closed because there is too often an outstretched hand on the other side.
