Some 40,000 Colorado businesses and nonprofits that use Google’s online advertising tools helped generate economic activity worth $2.88 billion in 2016, according to the tech giant’s latest economic impact report released Wednesday.

Colorado’s Google activity dwarfs that of most its neighbors, with New Mexico registering at $99.3 million, Wyoming at $173 million and Kansas at $1.35 billion. Only Utah outpaced Colorado in the region, with economic activity measuring $3.34 billion.

And, of course, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to California businesses, whose economic activity — essentially the revenue companies generate by selling ads and products via websites and search — generated $51 billion.

Are the numbers real? Google says yes and cites tools developed by its chief economist Hal Varian using a methodology published in the journal American Economic Review in 2009.

The economic news comes just weeks after Google announced it needed more space in Boulder, faster.

The company’s new central Boulder campus, rising southwest of the intersection of Pearl and 30th streets, is still months away from being ready for Google workers. So the tech giant leased 30,000 square feet at 3333 Walnut St.

According to its latest report, Google employs more than 650 people between its Boulder and Thornton operations. And though it declined to say how many would be housed in the new Walnut Street offices, local real estate experts estimate that roughly 200 people could be housed there.

And that number is likely to grow. The company said Wednesday that it has added 22,000 jobs in the U.S. in the past 36 months and employs 50,000 people in 21 states.
