Celebrities are slamming Time magazine for tweeting about Amal Clooney’s “baby bump” while she was delivering a speech at the United Nations urging the organization to investigate crimes committed by ISIS.
On Thursday, the human rights lawyer urged the U.N. not to let the Islamic State “get away with genocide,” noting the many atrocities committed by the terrorist group, including killings, rapes, kidnappings, and more. She attended with her client, Nadia Murad, a young Yazidi woman who was forced into sexual slavery by ISIS militants.
Despite the serious nature of Clooney’s U.N. speech, Time tweeted on Tursday, “Amal Clooney shows off her baby bump at the United Nations.” The tweet included a link to an article published on Motto, Time’s website aimed at younger women, which was titled, “Amal Clooney Rocks the Baby Bump Ahead of U.N. Speech.”
Twitter erupted with comments criticizing Time for focusing on Clooney’s pregnancy and not her plead to end mass violence. Among the stars who called out the magazine was Judd Apatow, who wrote, “This is what is wrong with Earth right now. Even @TIME is a click baiting fool.” Don Cheadle said, “Oh, @TIME…,” and then mocked the outlet for turning an important subject matter into an article about “how to pull off pesky pregnancy while still rocking couture like nobody’s business!” And Zoe Kazan wrote a series of tweets arguing that the publication’s handling of the situation speaks to a bigger issue about our culture “fetishizing the pregnant woman, turning her into a communal object.”
Meanwhile, a few journalists also knocked Time for its tweet. New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof wrote, “Oh, c’mon. Better headline: Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney calls for action at U.N. against genocide and mass rape of the Yazidi people.” And CNN anchor Jake Tapper said, “A lawyer named Amal Clooney gave a powerful speech at U.N.
