Landlady, Mandy Miles, hurried to unlocked the door to her tenants apartment, but what she saw shocked her beyond belief. Miles said she had been in her apartment when she heard screams for help coming from another room. The screaming belonged to pretty 22-year-old store clerk, Cerys Yemm.
Miles told officers she grabbed her keys and ran to the Flat. But when she opened the door, the sight took her aback. There, in the middle of the floor, sat Matthew Williams, stabbing and biting Ms. Yemm. Miles said that Williams was trying to chew the face off the young woman.
In the graphic 911 call to police, a tape of which was played to an inquest jury, Miles told the operator: “He’s shoving a screwdriver in her face. He’s actually chewing her face. “He’s been locked in room seven. I don’t know who he’s hurting. He’s actually eating her. It’s awful. His name is Matthew Williams and he’s in room seven.”
Then sobbing through heavy tears, Mrs Miles adds: “There was screaming and screaming. Oh my God. It’s awful. “I went into the room and he’s killed her. There’s blood everywhere and it looks like a horror film. He was using the screwdriver and stabbing.”
Rhodri Moore, Williams best friend, said he seemed fine after his release from jail, but deteriorated “after the first couple days. He was taking drugs on a daily basis. He said when he looked at a can of Coke he could see faces. He was seeing things, hallucinating. He was annoyed and on edge. Depressed. He couldn’t get any medication. His mother was trying very hard to get someone to see him. He was willing to be helped. He wanted to be helped.” Moore also told the jury that Williams binged on amphetamines and cannabis after his release and was smoking weed the day before he killed Cerys Yemm. “He was looking wired. He looked to me like he hadn’t been asleep.”
Sally Ann Williams said her son had been diagnosed with drug-induced schizophrenia after claiming he was a tree and saying his food was poisoned. “There was no mental health support whatsoever. He told me he’d been released without any medication. He’d been released without any probation restrictions.” She added her son complained “the voices were back” in the days before the killing. “He told me his head wasn’t right.”
Cerys Yemm dropped off groceries for him at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel near Caerphilly, South Wales. Later he sent her a text saying he had made “a lovely dinner.” Apparently, Cerys returned to the apartment later that evening. That night he killed Cerys, who he had met two weeks before.
Williams himself died in the same room later that night when police responded to the landlady’s emergency call. Police said Williams tried to attack them and they were forced to use a taser on him. Evidently the shock was too much for his heart while he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and he died at the scene.
