“The Vampire Diaries” series finale airs on Friday. In celebration of the show’s final episode, Gossip Cop is looking back at the rumors we’ve busted about “TVD” and its cast over the years.
“The Vampire Diaries” premiered on The CW in 2009, the same year Gossip Cop was founded. That November, just two months after the series started airing, Gossip Cop busted a rumor claiming Taylor Swift would make an appearance on the show. Though producer Kevin Williamson said he was “desperate” to have the singer play a vampire, her rep confirmed to us that nothing was planned. Sure enough, Swift never did cameo.
In 2010, HollywoodLife published an “exclusive” claiming series star Paul Wesley married girlfriend Torrey DeVitto. The actor’s rep exclusively told us the assertion was “all lies and not true.” The couple didn’t end up tying the knot until 2011, and they’ve since divorced. Romance rumors surrounding the show continued, but switched focus from Wesley to his co-stars, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder.
In Touch published a false story in early 2012 wrongly claiming Dobrev had turned down a marriage proposal from Somerhalder. But the actress’ rep told Gossip Cop point-blank, “There was no proposal.” We also busted engagement speculation from Perez Hilton in 2013. Then, in 2014, Star inaccurately linked Dobrev romantically to another co-star, Michael Trevino.
And, naturally, after Dobrev and Somerhalder split and he began dating Nikki Reed (who, coincidentally, starred in the vampire-themed Twilight movies), the gossip mill created a love triangle. That included HollywoodLies manufacturing a feud between the two women, crafting untrue stories about the actresses “dissing” each other. At one point, the webloid went as far as ridiculously claiming Dobrev had Reed “banned” from the show’s set.
Celeb Dirty Laundry, too, spent much of 2015 and 2016 peddling concocted tales about Dobrev’s jealousy, Reed’s insecurity, and Somerhalder and Reed supposedly splitting up. It all came to a head just last month, when Reed herself slammed “low-brow websites like hollywoodlife” for these “baseless rumors.” Just as Gossip Cop rightly said all along, the actress made clear there was no issues between Dobrev and herself.
Of course, we busted a number of other tall tales over the years, too. There was one that claimed Dobrev was going on “Dancing with the Stars,” and another that speculated she and Somerhalder were going to replace Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in the Twilight franchise. A different story actually claimed Stewart might guest-star on “The Vampire Diaries” in Dobrev’s place. It was all nonsense.
And although the fan-favorite show will be coming to an end tonight after eight bloody seasons, Gossip Cop has no doubt the program’s stars will remain tabloid targets. Gossip Cop will continue to take a bite out of the rumors, separating fact from fiction as necessary.
