Mary Tyler Moore died on Wednesday after battling a number of health problems, including Type I diabetes, which she had suffered from for nearly 50 years. The iconic actress was 80.
Her rep said in a statement, “Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine.” It continued, “A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile.”
Moore, best known for her hit 1970’s sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” passed away at a Connecticut hospital with family members by her side. She was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 33, early on during the run of her TV series, but the condition took a serious toll on her health in later years. In 2011, Moore had surgery to remove a benign brain tumor, and in 2014, it was reported that she was suffering from heart and kidney problems, and was nearly blind.
Despite her struggles, the actress stayed in good spirits and used her celebrity to raise awareness for Type 1 diabetes, which is usually diagnosed in children and young adults and causes the immune system to destroy cells in the pancreas. As noted above, Moore was the International Chairman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which created the “Forever Moore” research initiative in her honor in 2007.
Prior to “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” which ran for six seasons and spawned a spin-off series and variety specials, the actress rose to fame co-starring on “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” Moore also had a successful film career, receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role in the 1980 drama Ordinary People.
