He Took On The NFL!
The Super Bowl was a little over two weeks ago and people are still talking about the outcome of the game. Yes, it was a fantastic game in which the New England Patriots won in overtime. Lost in the aftermath of the game is the fact that the city of Houston played a gracious host.
Cities are more than happy to play host to the spectacle, as the Super Bowl is the most watched event in the United States. It brings a lot of publicity and ultimately revenue to the cities that host it. However the National Football League is starting to get power hungry in deciding which cities will be the next host of the Super Bowl.
They are starting to play more of a “social justice warrior” role in who gets to host future Super Bowls. Like how the NCAA is pulling their championship events out of North Carolina for their state’s transgender bathroom laws, the NFL has said that a similar bill in Texas could deter future Super Bowls from being played in the state.
Texas legislators are filing the bill, Senate Bill 6. Ultimately it will make it illegal for transgenders to use bathroom that they feel match what they claim is their own gender. In other words, a man who claims to be a woman would be unable to use the women’s restroom.
Despite the fact that as of June 2016, transgender individuals make up 0.6 percent of the population, the NFL is trying to play politics and say that if the bill passes, the NFL would not give out Super Bowl games to either Houston or Dallas in the future.
Football Is Big In The State Of Texas
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy spoke to the Associated Press and said that should a “proposal that is discriminatory or inconsistent with our values were to become law there,” it would be a factoring decision in awarding future events. In other words, if the bill passes, it could spell the end of Houston or Dallas hosting Super Bowls in the future.
Needless to say, Texas Governor Greg Abbott was less than pleased with that statement. “The NFL is walking on thin ice right here,” Abbott said to conservative radio host Glenn Beck. “The NFL needs to concentrate on playing football and get the heck out of politics.”
It’s simple: Why should the NFL be telling Texas politicians what bills to make or create due to the threat of there not being a Super Bowl there? Not to mention that the NFL has more issues to deal with than dictating which bills need to be passed or denied.
This is an organization that has wife beaters and athletes with drug issues, and athletes that abuse animals but they draw the line for 0.6 percent of the population? Considering that the drug suspensions are usually four games, and domestic abuse was only six games, the NFL is making a great statement about values.
“For some low-level NFL adviser to come out and say that they are going to micromanage and try to dictate to the state of Texas what types of policies we’re going to pass in our state, that’s unacceptable. We don’t care what the NFL thinks and certainly what their political policies are because they are not a political arm of the state of Texas or the United States of America. They need to learn their place in the United States, which is to govern football, not politics,” Abbott stated to Beck.
Essentially, Abbott told the NFL to stay out of their politics, which is something that shouldn’t have occurred in the first place. As stated earlier, this is a league that players with domestic abuse charges still playing and making millions upon millions of dollars.
Abbott Just Told The NFL Off
Why the NFL thinks that they have the moral high ground when they have issues like this occurring is a mystery. Ultimately the NFL has awarded Super Bowls through the 2021 season. Minnesota, Atlanta, South Florida, and Los Angeles are set to host the next four Super Bowls.
If the NFL does ultimately make the decision to take the Super Bowl out of Texas, they are losing two perfectly great hosts. As stated earlier, Houston did a phenomenal job hosting Super Bowl 51. In the past, Dallas has done a great job hosting the event as well.
The Governor of Texas has proven that he isn’t going to take things lightly. This is the same Governor that put his foot down on immigration reform. With the ongoing battle of illegal immigration and sanctuary cities, Abbott threatened to remove the funding from those sanctuary cities. Don’t mess with Texas indeed!
The Governor also took executive action by declaring all sanctuary cities in the state of Texas as illegal. He then took it one step further and banned them from occurring in the state, at the risk of losing federal funds. Abbott is going to turn around sanctuary cities in no time, especially if they want their funding.
Share this article with everyone to show that Abbott has taken exception with the NFL’s statement regarding the future of the Super Bowl in Texas. He said that the NFL should focus on governing football instead of telling states how to work their policies. Why should the NFL be the group to tell states how to make policies?
