A Spartanburg, South Carolina, mom was arrested after she allegedly hit her 6-year-old son who gave his grandmother a Mother’s Day card instead of her.
Shontrell Yurmeish Murphy, 30, hit the child “really hard a few times” in the back, front, and side of his head on Thursday, the victim’s sister said in an arrest warrant obtained by WSPA. Responding police were purportedly met by the grandmother and two children—one of which was crying.
Murphy supposedly told deputies she disciplined her son because he was misbehaving at school and that she didn’t strike her son in a “hard or in a violent manner.” However, the woman’s 8-year-old daughter told cops that her mom was angry that he didn’t make a Mother’s Day card for her.
In addition to the alleged beating, the report revealed the 30-year-old tore up the card in question. WBRC reported that officials recovered a handwritten card ripped to pieces at the scene.
The boy’s grandmother also claimed she witnessed Murphy hit the 6-year-old in the head three times Thursday night. The grandmother is believed to have called 911, according to WYFF.
The children told authorities that their mother hits them all the time and that they’re afraid of her.
The victim told officers that his head hurt and he was sad. He was transported to the hospital for an evaluation and was later released. WSPA reported that a nurse said the child didn’t suffer any head trauma.
Murphy is charged with cruelty to children. She is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
