Maybe a show about time travel where the machine is inside a duffle bag was a bad idea. The season finale of Making History aired on Fox tonight and the Adam Pally-starring show will not be back for a second season. The sitcom has already been cancelled.
Fox cancelled the sitcom back on May 11. Through the first eight episodes, it averaged a measly 0.69 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and just 1.585 million viewers, according to TVSeriesFinale.
Making History was a surprisingly unique comedy and probably would have done better if it aired during the week instead of on Sunday nights. It starred Pally (The Mindy Project) as Dan, a lowly employee at a Boston college whose father invented a time machine out of a duffle bag. (Clearly, that’s not as cool as a DeLorean.) Dan used the time machine to go back to the American Revolutionary period and fell in love with Paul Revere’s daughter Deborah (Leighton Meester). After realizing that he’s tipped the dominoes to stop the American Revolution from ever happening, he enlists history professor Chris (Yassir Lester) to help him put everything back together again.
The series only ran nine episodes. John Gemberling played John Hancock and Neil Casey starred as Sam Adams. Tim Robinson, Ben Vereen, Brett Gelman and Stephanie Escajeda also appeared on Making History. It was created by Julius Sharpe (Family Guy) and executive produced by Last Man on Earth‘s Christopher Miller and Phil Lord.
Overall, the 2016-2017 season was a mixed one for time-travel shows. While Time After Time flopped for ABC, NBC decided to renew Timeless. NBC had cancelled the show at first, but did a 180-degree turn after fans on Twitter helped save it.
Other Fox shows to get the ax this season include Sleepy Hollow, Son of Zorn, Pitch, Rosewood and APB.
